The Roman gladius is one of the ancient world’s most iconic weapons, symbolising the discipline and effectiveness of the Roman army. This talk explores the origins, design, and evolution of the gladius, showing how this short sword became a decisive tool in Rome’s expansion.
We will use case studies of gladii in UK collections such as the Chapel Street Gladius (The Novium), the Mainz-Wiesbaden Gladius (The Royal Armouries) and the Segontium Gladius (Storiel, Bangor). By examining archaeological examples, ancient texts, and reconstructions, we will uncover how this simple, yet sophisticated weapon helped shape the ancient world.
